Two thick coal seams are found in the hillsides at Catherine Hill Bay and they could be mined economically in the C19.
These were:
The Wallarah Seam
The Great North Seam
At Swansea the Fassifern Seam was near the surface and could be mined. Currently it is being mined under Lake Macquarie
