In 2013 when the Catherine Hill Bay Fire swept past the Crangan Bay Shaft it was closed but the many piles of discarded coal chitter caught fire and burnt for three months.

 

To avoid polluting the Lake, water could not be used to put it out. Instead, it had to be dug up and spread out to cool.
