This photo shows the original wooden jetty and coal being loaded.
The jetty timbers were not strong enough to withstand the impact of ships and after the steamer owned by the company, the Susannah Cuthbert, was wrecked, the company failed.
The wharf was abandoned and burnt.
Thomas Hale became bankrupt.
