Coal mining began here in 1873 and the street names are associated with the first mine.
Anders De Flon was the first Mine Manager
Montefiore and Lindsley were financiers and partners with Hale in the first mining company
Clarke St is named after the Rev. Brainwhite Clarke who surveyed the coal seams of the Hunter Valley for the NSW Governor.
Hale St and Hales Bluff are named after Thomas Hale who organised the first mining company, The New Wallsend Company
