As the continent moved north the ice sheets and glaciers disappeared and the streams deposited layers of mostly sandstone and claystone. These covered the coal measures.
From approximately 50 Ma the area then passed over a small volcanic plume (hot spot) and this raised the land from the Freemans Gap to Belmont and south to North Sydney; creating the Hornsby Plateau.
