The Karignan Conglomerate was formed by large braided rivers flowing from glaciers in mountains to the North. It is made up of small rounded stones and when eroded these fall to sea floor and are further reduced in size as they are tumbled by the waves.
In the 1950’s the cave was mined by a Mr Frisby for the decorative pebbles. These were used both as aggregate and for decorative pebblecrete
At low tide a Bob Cat was lowered into the cave. A pulley system and buckets were then used to extract the pebbles.
The pebbles were used at both at Bankstown Civic Centre and in the façade of Wynyard Station.
