The rocks of the Moon Island Sub-Group are the ones that you see in the area.

 

They are the top layers of the Newcastle Coal Measures and were formed as the Sydney Basin was filled in.

 

Rivers from the orocline in the north and volcanoes off the coast supplied the material.
