Gravel beaches such as this often form where headlands minimise the northwards longitudinal drift of sand along the coast.

The supply of sediment is then largely limited to eroded material from the cliffs and offshore reefs and also from aquatic life.

In this area the syncline that brought the Dooralong Shale to sea level on the platform has raised it into the cliff.  It is visible in several overhangs.
