Bird Island

This was part of a ridge before the sea level rose.

During WW2 it was used as an artillery target and a bombing range.

Over twenty types of birds have been recorded on the island and up to 7,000 pairs of wedge-tailed shearwaters and short-tailed shearwaters breed here each year.

They are often called “Mutton birds” and each year migrate over 30,000 km to feeding grounds in the Arctic, before returning.
