The map shows the present day area cover by the outpouring of lava known as the Siberian Traps.  This caused the Earth to undergo lethally hot global warming.

 

Air and sea temperatures were raised and, over a very short period of time, toxic amounts of greenhouse gases were emitted into the atmosphere.

 

Equatorial ocean temperatures exceeded 40 °C.
