Water was vital at the Moonee mine. Washing reduces the amount of ash and sulfur in the coal and can help to increase its energy content, making it more efficient to burn.

The process of coal washing typically involves several steps. First, the raw coal is crushed and screened to separate it into different sizes. Then, the coal is washed with water or a chemical solution to remove impurities such as ash, sulfur, and rock.

Water was collected from a dam bedside Moonee Beach. This was fed by permanent springs, flowing out of the wind-blown cliff top dunes above it.
