Moonee Mine Entrance retouched.jpg

In 1957 the Wallarah Coal Company was taken over by J&A Brown, Abermain Seaham (JABAS) Collieries, later to become Coal and Allied Operations Limited.

The Moonee Colliery was opened in 1960. The Pit head can be seen above, near the intersection of Clarke and Montefiore Streets.

Initially in 1982 the Wallarah seam was mined using the bord and pillar method but this  was too expensive for the market and so  in 1992 the mine was extended into the Great  North seam and Longwall Mining technics were used.

The coal washing and storage area is now housing
