On the walk to Pinny Beach you will see a unique combination of Permian coal measures, volcanic deposits and fossilised plants.
On one rock platform are exposures of the Reid’s Mistake Tuff, with remains of its amazing petrified forest. At approximately 260 Ma this forest was knocked down by the lateral blast of a volcano and covered in volcanic ash.
Very unusual features on the platform are lenses of Siderite (FeCO3) that appear to have been torn apart and rolled. Some are 14m in length.
Siderite like this often forms where iron rich fresh water meets salt water in environments with anoxic (low oxygen) sediments. It is usaually seen in sheets covering sedimentary rock.
