This gets its name from the large number of Grey Nurse Sharks that were found resting or “sleeping” here during the day. They are primarily nocturnal hunters, meaning they are more active at night.
During the day, they conserve energy by "milling" slowly or resting in one location, often near the seafloor or a protected area.
Unlike some other sharks that must continuously swim to push water over their gills, grey nurse sharks can remain stationary while breathing. This allows them to effectively "sleep" in place.
