In the early 1900’s Grey nurse sharks were hunted for their liver oil, which was used to fuel Sydney street lamps.

At the Shark Hole in the 1960’s and 70’s divers targeted them for sport using spears with exploding tips. Their habit of gathering in specific spots made them easy targets, leading to a significant population crash.
