Norah Head was named to honour

Bungaree Norah who was an Aboriginal man from the Broken Bay area. In his early life he settled in Sydney in 1791.

 

He impressed Matthew Flinders and sailed with him on his voyages. In the Norfolk he went to Moreton and Hervey Bays in Queensland in 1799.

 

He accompanied Flinders in the Investigator during his circumnavigation of Australia, 1801-1803 and in 1817 Bungaree sailed with Phillip Parker King to north-western Australia.

 

He helped make contact with new tribes and was commended by both Flinders and Governor King.
