During the late 18th Century travel by sea between Sydney and Newcastle posed significant dangers.

 

The treacherous coastal conditions, included thick fog, fierce storms, rugged rocks, and blackout weather conditions.

 

This led to numerous shipwrecks and loss of life.

 

Edward Hargraves was prominent in having the government build a lighthouse and he contributed funds.
