Structural Fire Resistance: Plants may adopt the features below to minimize fire damage.
Thick Bark: Many plants such as Eucalypts and Bansias have thick, insulating bark that protects the vital cambium layer from fire.
Succulence and High Moisture Content:
Coastal plants like Pigface (Carpobrotus glaucescens) possess fleshy leaves that store high levels of water, making them resistant to ignition.
Self-Pruning: Some plants reduce their own risk by shedding dead, dry lower branches, which reduces the chance of a surface fire reaching the canopy. This also may conserve water during periods of drought.
